Outside of the closet there are three light switches. Another dead giveaway of a three way switch is the absence of on and off markings.
Wiring A 3 Way Switch
Three lights on one switch. It is normal to run a 3 wire cable redblackwhiteground between the lights in order to accomplish the wiring scheme. A simple ordinary on off light switch as in the first photo has two screws on it. Three light switches there are three switches in a hallway. A three way light switch is different than a traditional single pole light switch as it contains an extra screw to connect an extra wire. The door to the room is closed and you cant see whether the light is on or off. One switch controls a light fixture in a room at the far end of the hall.
The electrical line passes through and flipping the switch either connects or disconnects the flow of current. However wiring three switches to control one light is possible. In a four way switch configuration three switches control a single fixture whether it is a light receptacle or other appliance. However you know the light is off to start. The other way to wire multiple lights to one switch is to connect all of them directly to the switch in a home run configuration. You can do this light switch wiring in one of two ways.
The door is closed and you cannot see if the light is on or off through the door. If power is routed to the end light that has the switch cable then the problem is also resolved. Extending to three or more lights if three four or even more lights are required to be switched from a single source the new cable can be extended to as many lights as required. Here the ceiling rose is shown with two cables both of which connect to line neutral and earth with no loop connection. This is known as the common screw and its usually black instead of brass or silver. The configuration is called four way because the middle switch in the circuit has four connecting terminals rather than the usual three found on most switches.
First lets take a look at the back of several different light switches. The most common is to daisy chain the light fixtures by connecting them to each other and hooking the first one up to the switch.
