As long as the top timing marks line up exactly to the cover and the left and right marks line up with the cover the 2 marks at the bottom dont make a difference but they are always offset when we install them and i work for a subaru dealership. The covers distort with time and heat.

Subaru timing marks not lining up. 1999 subaru legacy outback ej25. Done about 5 in the last 4 months including my own motor and havent had any problems. Also if you ever wondered how many. So im doing the timing belt and like an idiot i took the old belt off without having the timing marks on the cams and crank lined up at the top. Can i just turn them back to the top without the belt on. Especially if its an aftermarket belt.
After you line the belt up with the timing marks on the sprockets and hand crank the motor the timing marks will not line up again. Ignore the notches on the timing cover as well. Again with the crank sprocket mark lined up at 1200 with the mark on the oil pump see pics to determine which marks im talking about you cannot hit the pistons with the valves. As long as you set the timing marks on the sprockets relative to the engine block and the timing marks on the belt relative to the sprockets correctly you are fine. Putting on a new timing belt if i line up all the belt alignment marks on the belt with those on the crank and cam sprokets either the right or left side appears to read more.
