Feb 7 2008 8. Your supposed to have the oil go from the tranny to the external cooler and then back to the radiator cooler and then back to the tranny.

Oil cooler vs radiator. The oil cooler is based on the same flow through principle as the transmission cooler. Bringing down the temperature of motor oil has many focal points particularly in air cooled engines. It is installed in line with the vehicles oil delivery system. This way it doesnt get too cold in the winter. You only need a tranny cooler if your putting high load on the tranny and it is overheating. Tranny coolers mounted against radiator causing vibration wear and cooler failures.

It is just operational when the engine is running. In my opinion having the oil cooler is better than not. Oil coolers are optional. Like the radiator the oil cooler is a series of tubes and cooling fins.
The larger the oil cooler the more effective it is at. Coolers can be wide narrow large or small and installed depending on your transmission power and vehicle size. Do i need an oil cooler also. Cooling fins take the oils heat and radiate it to the atmosphere.
