The ground wire connection should provide a continuous bond throughout the metal components of the light fixture. Insert a screwdriver in the small rectangular opening in the back of the switch just below the wire and push twist until the old black plastic switch breaks into pieces.

No ground wire light switch. Is this an issue that should be addressed or is it acceptable. Typically the ground wire is attached to the metal housing of the light fixture. I think they are ground wires grounding something to the switch box but the ground red is pigtailed to two wires one white going up and one blue going down. The switches all have the green ground screw but nothing is attached to it. I dont recommend it but you can wire a light switch without ground if you have to. If your light switch spark box is made of metal its likely that the bare copper ground wire youre looking for is wrapped around the wiring cables sheath and held in place by the clamp.
Connecting the ground wire to a metal electrical box will energize the box in the event of a short circuit. Dont ground to the electrical box. Installing light fixtures that have no ground wire is something that can be done by yourself. They can do their job just fine with or without ground. Dont rely on metal sheathing or an exposed ground wire. But check will all local building codes because it may require a rewiring of your home to bring it up to date.
The green colored screw in the upper left is for the ground wire. I despise these back stab switches and outlets which the builder of this 1989 home i purchased in 2012 used exclusively. In the event that the live wire comes loose and touches the light fixture the ground wire diverts the power and blows the breaker instead of you feeling an electrical shock when you touch the fixture. The house is in clark county indiana if that matters for building code. Its a safety. Thats the only purpose the ground wire serves.
Some occupancy sensing automatic light switchesneed a ground wire but traditional toggle type switches do not. In some cases the ground wire extends through out the light fixture to junction box locations where the light socket wiring is spliced together. Eventually the wire will come out. The box could overheat and start a fire or someone could get a shock from touching it. But there are some other wires in the box and i want to figure out what they are. The ground wire is designed to protect you. Im looking at one switch box where it looks like a normal drop with no neutral just two lines connected to the single pole switch. If the box is metal then attach the fixture ground wire to the box. I obviously know nothing about electricity so any help is appreciated.
