I have a 3 way circuit providing current to 4 recessed led lights. With lights off im getting varying voltages of 34 to 60 volts.

3 way switch voltage when off. 3 way switch voltage on off wire is it normal to observe some voltage 25 50 volts when a three way switch connection is off perhaps as a result of some electromagnetic or some other phenomenon. However when i turn the switches off my volt meter shows either 36 or 38 volts depending which switch is used on the wires at the end of the cable run where my fixture will go. Disconnect all three wires or four if the outlet is grounded. Now using your multimeter you are going to determine which of the three colored wires is. 2 turn the power back on. Other than that is it a 3 way switch or is the light wired with 2 switches in series ie can the light be controlled by either switch regardless of the position of the other switch.
Voltage present after switch turned off re. 3 install the first. Turn off the correct circuit at your electrical panel. In the dining room it is the same with two 3 way switches. When the switches are off the led lights still burn very dimly. I disconnected all of the wires and checked the switches and they worked perfectly fine complete discontinuity when broken.
Identifying the common wires. This is a circuit with two 3 way switches and one 4 way switch controlling a ceiling fan with light. I dont know why i bothered to check the voltage before putting the new fixture on and after taking the old one off but i did and it read 123v when on good obviously but it read 38v when turned off. Its likely youll also need to replace the existing switch box with a larger one to accommodate the extra wires for the 3 way switch. 1 turn off the power to the circuit at the main panel. Hi guys ive encountered this problem twice now. Add an electrical box for the second 3 way switch in the basement. Approximately 23 volts in one of the fixtures. However the fan and lights work normally as they should. Where is this voltage coming from and how much voltage is acceptable when 3 way switches are turned off.

There is a way of wiring a three way switch not to code any more that uses two different live circuits on the same side of the 120 normally it was used from building to building but any thing is possible so it is possible to have the light off and both switches off and have a full 120 volt potential on a three way circuit. The first time i was replacing a light fixture and i was the only one in the house so i just turned off the 3 way switch before getting to work. Or is the presence of such a voltage an indication of some type of short or other problem in my wiring that needs to be fixed.
