I attached one wire to the top side screw on the new switch and the other two to the other side screw. The old switch is a single pole but it has three black wires attached to it.

Another black is in a loop around bottom screw and 3rd screw is in hole next to bottom screw. There are groves on a plate under the screws. Ran into a unique light switch this evening where one of. My limited understanding tells me that you are supposed to use one or the other the push in or the screw. Of the three black wires only one of them is hot. All the white wires are capped together and the same is for the ground wires. When opening the switch i found 3 unmarked black wires as shown here.
