A cylinder leak down test takes more time to perform. But can give you a more accurate and detailed picture of the engines overall health.

Leak down tester diesel. In the leak down test you move the up to tdc because of cylinder choke then work the prop back and forth to seat the rings. A cylinder leak down test requires the removal of all the spark plugs. Most often you can use the hose from a compression tester. The tester then measures the volume of air needed to maintain a predetermined pressure in the cylinder. Then using a similar type of connector as the compression test we fill the cylinder with pressure. Instead of measuring the engines ability to create pressure compressed air is introduced into the cylinder through the spark plug hole.
Leakdown test the leakdown test measures how well the cylinder is sealing. One gauge on the tester measures the pressure of the air entering the cylinder and the other measures the percentage of the air escaping or leaking from the cylinder. This is done by inserting compressed air around 100 psi into the cylinder at tdc and then measuring how much is lost. An engine leakdown test is a compression test in reverse. In aircraft the leak down test is used because you dont want to stand next to a spinning prop doing a compression test. In a cylinder leak down test the engine is placed on of the cylinder in question. Although a simple leak down tester can be made with about 25 worth of material from most hardware stores this is probably the next best alternative. Appears durable so far and the aluminum shield isnt really necessary but there is no need to pay more for an item that will do the same job.
