The 516 fuel line is actually perfect for smaller outboards. Some places refer to the 516 as gas hose.

5 16 vs 3 8 hose. For a small homebrew setup either should work fine. Id like to steer clear of an adapter with 2 chunks of hose at each end if possible. Theyre actually manufactured to army navy or an sizing so an 5 would be the 516 size and an 6 would be the 38. Would you think twice about jamming the 516 hose onto the 38 barbed hose adapter. I think you want the barb size to match your hose size id either way.
This could be better if you are attaching tools to the end of the hose that may get destroyed by high water pressure. This means that 6an hose will not introduce any appreciable flow restriction in a fuel system designed around 38 od rigid tubing. 516 inch kinda gets left out. Be aware that a longer hose reduces the water volume expelled. From 25 to 100 feet long choose the best length for your property. You can get it clear red or blue.
I have an inline fuel filter near the aux tank with a 38 fitting. 516 inch is not used as much as the other 2. The 34 hose is going to deliver water at a slightly higher rate as it has a bigger surface area. The 58 hose will reduce water pressure more if you have really high pressure water supply. I went 516 in red just so its easier to tell the gas lines from the liquid lines when its all stuffed into the keezer. I have an aux tank that has a fitting for a 516 hose but ive now replaced everything with 38 hose.
Id like to just use 38 hose but im worried it might be too loose over the 516. The an numbers refer to the tubing od in sixteenths of an inch. But the only supplier i can find makes them in 14od and 38od sizing and skips over the 516 8mm size that i need. The thing is light and medium duty units use 14 inch hose and then the heavy duty units jump to the 38 inch hose. Both the tank and pump connections are 38. 3an hose has the same id as a 316 tube.
Being smaller allows it to go easily into a smaller rigging tube depending on the application. Its for pro machines because of the high volume flow requirement. For example 8an hose has the same id as a 12 nominal tube 816 12. Both 58 and 34 inch hoses come in various lengths. Being a little smaller than the 38 hose it works great for little kicker motors and sailboat outboard engines. I have about a 1 gap at the tank end and about 10 to work with on the pump end.
On my mustang project the fuel line that runs from the tank to the fuel pump is 516. 38 inch is the thickest diameter hose youll see around.
